Supporting a World-Class Production Across Two Iconic Venues

When the acclaimed Les Misérables World Tour arrived at Birmingham's Utilita Arena and London's Royal Albert Hall, Gallowglass was selected to provide event crew support. Working alongside the tours Head Rigger Roger Smissen and the team at Javert Productions Limited, our event crews in Birmingham and London helped bring this large-scale production to life across two very different venues.

Drawing on our extensive experience in theatre, arena and live entertainment productions, we supplied specialist event crew to support the load-in, build and breakdown of the show. Our teams helped keep the project on schedule while ensuring equipment was moved safely and efficiently throughout each venue.

The Challenge

A production of this scale always comes with its challenges. Birmingham's Utilita Arena needed an experienced local crew capable of supporting a major international tour. With significant staging, scenery and technical equipment to manage, every aspect of the operation had to be carefully coordinated to keep everything running smoothly.

The Royal Albert Hall presented an even bigger logistical test. The historic venue's unique layout, combined with the sheer scale of the production, required a carefully planned load-in and build, followed by an even more detailed overnight load-out involving multiple loading bays, vehicle rotations, cross-loading operations and the movement of equipment through restricted backstage areas. The end goal was straightforward: to clear the venue safely and efficiently within a tight overnight schedule, ensuring the following show could begin its load-in the next morning.

The Solution

Working closely with the production team, Gallowglass helped deliver a crew strategy that provided continuity between the Birmingham and London venues. Having a core group of crew work across both locations improved efficiency and meant the team already understood the show's many moving parts, reducing the need for repeated briefings.

At the Royal Albert Hall, our crew supported the carpentry, set, lighting, sound, video and production departments, while additional personnel managed logistics, lift operations and loading bays. An eight-trailer rotation system and dedicated cross-load facility helped ensure equipment was removed, reorganised and prepared for onward transport as efficiently as possible.

The Result

Through detailed planning, strong leadership and a close working relationship with the production team, Gallowglass successfully supported the Les Misérables World Tour in both Birmingham and London.

Supporting the production across two cities was a major undertaking. Over an eight-day period, 113 skilled crew, crew chiefs and forklift operators from Birmingham and London delivered a combined 1,718 hours on site, demonstrating the scale of resources, planning and expertise required to ensure the show's success.

From large-scale arena operations to a complex overnight load-out, our event crew delivered the flexibility, professionalism and expertise needed to support one of the world's most iconic musical productions. The project showcased our ability to provide scalable crew solutions while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency and service.
