Choosing the right crew is a crucial step in ensuring your event is the best it can be. In our “Why Choose Gallowglass” series, we’re going in-depth into some of the details that have made us a market leader in event crew in the UK and further afield.

There’s much to consider when planning an event, so any weight off your shoulders is of huge benefit. In this latest blog, we talk about the peace of mind our decades of expertise can give to events organisers, safe in the knowledge that they have a fully capable and compliant team on hand to help.

PAYE and Legal Compliance

Since 2008 we have been fully IR35 compliant with everyone on PAYE along with having their visas and passports checked at the induction stage to ensure everyone is legal to work in the UK. We are a fully insured company with Public Liability, Product Liability and Professional Indemnity cover.

Our Integrated Management System has been externally audited. We are fully compliant and have been awarded ISO’s 9001, 14001, 20121 and 45001.

Experienced Crew and Chiefs

Our Crew Chiefs have years of experience, a wealth of knowledge and continue to mentor crew new and old throughout their career at Gallowglass. They are trained in site Health & Safety (CSCS + SPA), Emergency First Aid at work, and are licenced to operate plant machinery.

All crew know (or get to know) our clients and the individuals that work for them. They know the jobs, they know the kit and are often the first to work with new equipment coming into the industry. They also know the venues and make lives easier whilst on-site.

Our crew chiefs and clients on-site continuously monitor all crew. This gets fed back to the office via the crew and client app, showing how they’re developing as crewmen. Regional managers continually monitor this to offer support and further development if needed.

Office/Management

We are contactable 24/7 all year round. Our Duty Managers are on call outside office hours.

Our office staff know the industry, venues, clients and their needs. Our crew historically climb through the ranks and become office staff, managers, regional managers and even Directors of Gallowglass. They know this industry from the ground up.

Regional managers all began as crew, know the work involved, the talk, the venues, the people and can advise from experience.

Our Operations team know every crew member that works for us in their region along with where they’re based, and schedule them on work nearest to their home address. They’re geniuses at working out the best way to make sure crew can work as many hours as they want to while ensuring all H&S terms are met and rest between jobs is honoured.

Crew Standards

From the very beginning, Gallowglass has maintained the highest standards for its crew whilst on-site. There are several golden rules they must follow; the most important ones are never to be late (arriving less than 15 minutes early for a shift is considered late), to always have a proactive attitude and to always ask “what’s next to do?”.

The crew are always subject to spot site visits from management staff. This is to make sure they are always wearing the correct uniform and have the correct PPE at all times.

Crew are paired with senior boys until they pass probation. Until then, they will never work on a crew of fewer than four people, to ensure they are fully capable.

Inductions

Everyone who wears a Gallowglass uniform will have been through our induction to assess that they can work safely, in a team and will understand the tasks that will be required of them.

In this induction, they are trained on:

  • lifting techniques,
  • the different types of flight cases,
  • truss,
  • lights,
  • speakers,
  • cabling and cable management,
  • barrier work,
  • the tools used on-site and the standards we expect from everyone on site.

New recruits will find out the history of Gallowglass and where we’ve come from, along with the projects small and large that we’ve worked on over the years. They will be given their uniform and complete a Health and Safety test to make sure they have understood everything learned that day.
