Meet the Venue: Goodwood Festival of Speed | Goodwood House - textSectionComponent

Have you checked-out our ‘Meet the Venue’ blogs? So far we’ve taken readers behind the scenes at the SEC, Cardiff Principality Stadium, and the Tower of London.  And now it’s the turn of Goodwood House, home to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This summer, Gallowglass crewmen have been hard at work for the Festival’s 25th anniversary.

Name(s): Goodwood House

Age: 402 years old

Location: Kennel Hill, Chichester

Size: 12,000 acres

Capacity: 150,000 (festival visitors)

Description

Goodwood House was constructed in 1616, in the fabulous countryside surrounding Chichester, by the 9th Earl of Northumberland. It was bought in 1627 by the first Duke of Richmond. The house and surrounding grounds have since been passed down through the generations, with the current, 11th Duke of Richmond, Charles Gordon-Lennox, now in residence with his wife and children.

As well as being an aristocrat and photographer, the Duke of Richmond’s father was the founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a world-renowned motoring event that takes place at Goodwood every year. Held in the beautiful grounds of his majestic property, this unique and vibrant event is essentially the world’s biggest motoring garden party. It takes place over one magical weekend, when both car manufacturers and automobile enthusiasts come together to celebrate motorsport in all its glory.

Visitors are enthralled by high-octane demonstrations from some of the world’s fastest cars. This is the Ascot for petrol-heads: hundreds of vehicles are on display and, the world’s leading car manufacturers deliver show-stopping theatrical performances to ensure they stand out from the competition.  The cars are showcased in the most exciting, innovative and memorable light possible.

Gallowglass at Goodwood Festival of Speed

We have been crewing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for over 15 years; providing essential support to both organisers and manufacturers to ensure the festival runs as smoothly as possible. From building mega multi-storeyed stands for world-famous brands - such as Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche and McLaren - to installing flooring, staging and lighting for special exhibitions, our crews have carried out a multiplicity of tasks, all vital to making this one of the most spectacular events in the automotive calendar.

Over the years, Gallowglass event crews have put-in over 6,200 days of work at the Festival. They have supported 58 different clients and deployed more than 2,860 crewmen. Between them, they’ve clocked-up a staggering 103,740 miles driving to and from the Goodwood site at slower speeds than those witnessed on the circuit. This summer alone, for one client, experiential agency TRO, our crewmen completed attention-grabbing stands for the likes of BMW, Land Rover, Porche and Mini.

Our crews get a huge buzz from working at Goodwood. Not only do they feel a great sense of achievement from helping to bring this high-profile event together, but they have the unique privilege of exploring the cars and stands before the paying visitors are allowed through the gates. Yet another advantage of being part of the Gallowglass team!
