Project Summary

Phew! MWC 2017 saw 110 Gallowglass crew deliver over 10,000 man hours for 25 different clients – working on 44 separate jobs at 17 venues.  Among the services provided were: fork lift operators, scissor lift operators, cherry picker drivers and carpenters – overseen, of course, by highly experienced crew chiefs.

We love a good challenge!

The annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona is the mobile industry’s largest global showcase, attracting over 2,300 companies and 100,000 professionals to view the latest mobile products and technological advances. Hotel occupation hits its annual peak, exhibition badges flash in every restaurant, bar and bus – and business transactions worth millions take place over four short days.

Not surprisingly, with an event space the size of 40 football stadiums, coherent planning and teamwork are critical to the Show’s success. By January, event suppliers have already been set their deadlines and targets in readiness for the frantic run-up to the show. This is where Gallowglass comes in.

At this time, our Spanish office bolsters its crew numbers, involving a thorough recruitment, training and induction process to ensure all health and safety regulations are met and every client receives Gold Standard performance.

As the MWC approaches, crewmen are dispatched around the clock, often at short notice, in response to changing build schedules. This year we installed and built some of the largest stands we’ve ever worked on at the Show.

Here are a few of our own MWC highlights:

Google & AndroidBrand Fuel were responsible for assisting, building and setting up three locations, two of which were internal stands occupying an area 497.6 sq m; the other – the Android Global Village - was located between Halls 2 and 3. Gallowglass supplied 77 crewmen, two fork lift operators and one scissor lift operator to cover 213 shifts (1861 hours) on-site, to load-in, build, derig and load out.

Huawei Technologies – working with Creative Technology (CT) Spain at several venues, we assisted with the load-in, build and derig of a large set, stage, lighting rig and audio system to host the Huawei Delegates’ After Party. We supplied 74 crewmen and two fork lift operators to cover a total of 288 shifts (2445 hours) at the Palau Sant Jordi.  Crews also worked across other venues including: Fira Gran Via Barcelona, Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya, Nautic Centre Barcelona, Hotel Meliá Barcelona Sky, Capella del MACBA and the CT Spain Warehouse - to distribute equipment and assist the exhibitors across all locations.

Verizon – Working under Nth Degree, on a stand covering a floor space of 862 sq m, we supplied 47 Crewmen, two fork lift operators and one scissor lift operator to cover 243 shifts (2159 hours) to load-in, build, derig and load-out. The stand’s design included tall framework-based structures to display Verizon’s signage. Qualified crew were needed to work at height and assemble the signage safely, alongside the audio and visual elements that made up the final overall display.

Sony, Ericsson and Ooredoo – these stands were all the responsibility of Jack Morton Worldwide, covering a collective floor space of 8,241.94 sq m and requiring 59 crewmen to cover 201 shifts (1407 hours).  Work included: loading-in and setting-up of the stands, moving large volumes of furniture around the building, resetting the spaces used for press conferences and eventually breaking down and loading-out.

We were also tasked with the setup of the MWC Main Auditorium in Hall 4, which held the GSMA Conference and consisted of a space of 7,980 sq m and played host to some of the exhibition’s largest crowds.  

Pressure was high on the last few days of the build, everything needed to be ready to host the thousands of anticipated visitors. Targets were met and all work was completed in time for the opening of the show.

MWC 2017 was a storming success and with more than 108,000 attendees this year, the show can only get bigger and better.  Our Barcelona team proudly delivers on this flagship event year-on-year, receiving positive feedback from our clients.
