Meet the Team: Interview with Steve Reinders - textSectionComponent

Have you considered applying for a job as a crew member with Gallowglass? We have teams of dedicated crew all over the UK providing our specialist services to an array of events every single day. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, our Crew Chiefs and Regional Managers work tirelessly to ensure that our service is of the highest quality. But what does it take to be a good Regional Manager? We recently interviewed our Regional Manager for Scotland Steve Reinders to hear about his experience with the company and how his career has progressed.

How long have you worked for Gallowglass?

I have worked for Gallowglass for 13 years now; I have been a Regional Manager for four of those.

What led you to apply for a role with the company?

I was new to the country and stuck in a boring call centre job beforehand. I was friends with some lads on the crew and, after hearing about their experiences, I decided to give it a go.

Tell us a little about how you came to be the Scotland Regional Manager:

When the last Regional Manager left, I was invited to apply for the position; it was an excellent opportunity to progress further through the ranks. I was chosen out of 3 candidates in the end, and here I am four years later!

What is an average day in your role?

Every day varies, but I usually start by making sure everything from the previous day has gone according to plan and monitoring any changes to today’s schedule before I make a start on allocating crew for jobs coming up in my region. I then answer emails, deal with some crew queries and try and do some site visits where I can! The days are busy, but the variety keeps things interesting.

If your crews were to describe you in three words, what do you think they would say?

Honest, easy-going and a team player.

What’s been your favourite event to work on to date?

Commonwealth Games 2014; it was a baptism of fire as we were involved in so many different aspects of the event, but a great experience non-the less!

What do you think is the most important characteristic of being a crewman?

Being a team player is vital. This means they will have most attributes we are looking for in a crewman and will likely do well in their role.

Can you tell us a little bit about the training you’ve undertaken throughout your Gallowglass career?

I’ve have acquired numerous plant and first aid qualifications amongst others, and I will be undertaking a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course in the next few months.

When you’re not at work, what do you get up to?

I play football twice a week and try to go to the gym a few times as well. I like to cook and go out for a nice dinner here and there (hence the need for the gym!) I also love travelling, though these days I am planning a few nicer holidays each year, rather than several months of exploring – I get to travel all over my region anyway!

What are your future career plans?

I’m hoping to take Gallowglass Scotland further, and improve our business in the quieter winter months. It's hard to predict the future, but I will have to see what will come my way!

Do you think you’ve got what it takes to be a Regional Manager one day? Take a look at our event jobs in Glasgow, Edinburgh and elsewhere in the UK to see where your career with Gallowglass could take you.
