Meet the Team: Interview with Elite Crewman, Demetrios Christodoulou - textSectionComponent

In the latest instalment of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we interview one of our Elite Crewmen, Demetrios Christodoulou. With Gallowglass for just over two years, Demetrios knows what it’s like to be a member of our team and has travelled with event crew in London across the UK to work at some truly fantastic events. Today, he is here to share some of  his experiences:

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a Greek Cypriot born and raised in London. I have always been creative and good with my hands, so I like to think of myself as a natural grafter. Gallowglass suits me just fine!

How long have you worked for Gallowglass?

I have been with Gallowglass now for just over two years and have climbed the ranks to the role of Elite Crewman.

What was your work experience before joining Gallowglass?

I ran my own upcycling furniture company, where I made and sold furniture from all sorts of inanimate objects. I also worked at a pub a couple of days a week to keep the finances ticking over.

Describe a typical ‘day in the life’ in your job?

Well – to begin with, there’s no such thing as a typical day!  While the work is largely about loading and unloading trucks, moving production kit or scenery into position, or setting-up stages, we sometimes handle awkward or very valuable items – and the challenge is always to get the job done as fast and efficiently as possible!

My shift could start at any time of day or night, which for some could be a struggle but I enjoy the fact I could be finished early and have the rest of the day to myself. On the other side, I could start at midnight and work through till the sun comes up, which can sometimes knock your sleeping pattern out but it’s the nature of the events industry and the work we do.

The job I’m assigned to could take place anywhere – from a hotel, theatre, office, cinema, an outdoor space or someone’s house in central London. I could find myself heading out of the city to Lulworth Castle on a film shoot, to Stoke Park Golf Club for a corporate event or to Reading Festival to set up the stage, lighting rig and sound system on multiple stages. No two days are the same, and I’m still amazed when I turn up to a job and its something completely different to what I expected.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of being part of the Gallowglass team?

I think the variety. You’re constantly working at different venues and on various projects with all sorts of interesting people. My work with Gallowglass rarely gets boring and I’ve got no need for a gym membership, which is great!

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

Scruffy

Hairy

Clown

What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not busy crewing?

I create content for my fashion Instagram account Lou et Lon (@Louetlon), make the odd bit of furniture and try not to get up to any skulduggery!

Could you tell us more about your fashion involvement?

I co-run a fashion Instagram page where we dress ourselves and friends in looks we think are current while taking photos of stylish people. We are hoping to build up a reputation as menswear stylists.

London Fashion Week is next month; could we soon see you on the stage as well as building it?

Maybe on the sidelines admiring the outfits and taking the odd cheeky photo!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Hopefully, self-sufficient in the Menswear industry.
