What does the job entail?
Here at Gallowglass, we have a wide variety of job roles available which are suited to both skilled tradesmen and untrained students. We provide all of our crew members with basic in-house crew training when they join our team, which will teach them all they need to know to head off on their first job.
Each event is really quite different, one week you might be setting up a stage at the 02 Arena in London and the next you may be helping out on the set for the next big screen film. Most of our event crew jobs are focused around manual labour, with specialty roles available for those with previous experience in areas such as lighting and carpentry. A select few jobs won’t be physically hard work and may involve you just being on hand for any last-minute jobs. Either way, you should always be prepared for some hard graft, heavy lifting and a lot of teamwork!
How much will I get paid?
Our pay ranges from between £8.50 - £17.00 per hour, depending on skill level and experience. If you decide to stay with us for longer than just the summer, there will be many chances for you to develop your skills further in training courses and qualifications where you might be eligible for a pay promotion.
We’ve had several members of the team join us initially on a temporary basis, who have then have decided to work their way up the ranks to roles such as Crew Chief, Regional Manager and Business Development Manager. Career progression is an important part of our business for those who wish to climb the ladder. However, if you’re looking to fill somewhat of a stop-gap, student summer holiday or for a job with flexible working hours, we’re happy to take you on short-term without tying you down for good.
What kind of qualifications or experience do I need?
Again, the experience and qualifications needed will depend on the individual roles. However, for our basic event crew roles little to no experience is necessary (although it is preferred). This means that you can still have an opportunity to work with us even if you’ve never set foot in an event before – perfect for students! An interest in the events industry, a good work ethic and a high level of motivation will be essential as we want members that are willing to work hard to retain our high standards!
What kind of events will I be working?
The events we work with differ at all times of the year; events we’ve recently worked at include Lumiere London 2018, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Henley Royal Regatta! Every day at Gallowglass is different and our teams are always thrilled to hear about new events and projects that they will have the chance to work on, which are wildly diverse! Take a look at our Gallowglass Highlights 2017 to discover some of the most exciting events we were a part of last year!
What are the working hours?
The working hours will very much depend on the event; we often have crew working shifts at all hours of the day to ensure that we meet the expectations and tight deadlines of our clients. The days can be very long and tiring, and exact hours will be confirmed through our handy Crew App, along with information on fellow crew members, team leaders and any other necessary contact information. We offer flexible zero-hour contracts, which means that with just a week’s notice you can take time off.
Does the job end at the end of Summer?
One of the big advantages of our flexible working is that you can continue your job once the summer ends. If this requires moving you to a different regional base so that you can carry on working with us during term time, that’s absolutely possible! We can work your shifts around your study time and ensure that you can keep earning throughout the year.
How do I apply?
First of all, fill out one of our online application forms for the region that is most suitable for you. Here you can attach a CV and give us some basic information. Shortly after, if you are successful, you’ll receive an invitation to an interview. This is typically more of a casual chat to ensure you know what you’re letting yourself in for and for us to get to know you a little better.
If the interview goes well, you’ll then be invited to an induction day where there will be some paperwork, health and safety briefings and a few practical tests. Then, if you pass the induction you’ll be offered a job and handed your uniform.
You could then be given your first job within 24-48 hours after getting the job! There won’t be a lot of waiting around for us to get back to you; so, if you’re after an immediate start, this is not often a problem! If you want to know more about what to expect in the application process, we’ve got a more in-depth guide for you here.
